So, I picked up a digital camera and tried
to find things in my own yard, not in the allure of the mysterious
and the unfamiliar, the distant, and the ultimately corrupt and
broken. I looked for America, the Beautiful, among other places.
And, from time to time, I still could pick up the larger format
screen and attempt to go back to doing something perfect in the
classical world - with the linen backdrop. I started to use Polaroids
and larger format cameras: The Nude. The Still Life. The Doll.
And here comes the 21st Century. Photographs during wartime. I
still find it is people that inspire me: Nkemdi. Carlinhos. Hassell.
Miles. Willie Mays. Rembrandt. Penn. (Walker) Evans. I still believe
that the best photograph is a political photograph. I still like
seeing things for the first time. I still think in terms of a
little bit of light and a lot of darkness. That’s what I’ve
been dealt.
But, it’s the work that gives me reason. It’s the
mix that makes it work. The obvious with a touch of the subtle
-what I like to call "soupcon soul."
And I like the idea being able to mix them up and show them to
you in these following pages. There’ll be more to come.
And, for sure, with that there will be always a lot more beauties
and beasts, politicians and priests....
But, that will come later on……..
